Are you tired of constantly setting goals only to fall short of reaching them? It can be frustrating to constantly strive for change, but never see the results you desire. However, the problem may not lie within your ability to reach your goals, but rather the alignment of your values with those goals.
Many people set goals to save more, spend less, eat healthier, exercise more, and so on. But if these goals do not align with your values, it can be difficult to achieve and maintain them.
As a financial coach, it can be frustrating to work with clients who articulate that they want a certain outcome but do everything but what I suggest to them in the follow up. What I didn’t understand as a coach was that although my clients were coming to me for my expertise, they weren’t coming to me with my same values. In pursuing my financial counseling designation through the AFCPE, I understand now that as a counselor it’s important to make sure that the options I provide align client values with their goals in order to reach success.
When your values and goals are aligned, it becomes much easier to reach your desired outcome. Your mind and heart are already in the same place, working together towards the same end. This is why it's so important to take the time to reflect on your values and make sure your goals align with them.
Maybe you don’t actually want that 6 figure job but you think that’s what success looks like. Maybe you don’t need to buy a house right now or maybe you aren’t ready to invest yet but all you see on social media are messages that encourage these feats as signs of financial success.
Additionally, you may not even be conscious of how your choices impact your goals. Perhaps you have a saving goal or debt elimination goal of a particular dollar amount that seems pretty far away and you continue to dip into that savings balance with a promise to pay yourself back or you keep adding to the debt pile.
If you find yourself struggling to reach your goals, it may be helpful to reflect on what you prioritize over those goals. This self-reflection can help you recognize the behaviors that may be hindering your progress and give you the power to make a change. Literally ask yourself “what am I prioritizing over this goal?” and explore the why.
Aligning your values with your goals is the key to success in any coaching, consulting, or counseling relationship. By taking the time to reflect on your values and priorities, you can empower yourself to reach your full potential and achieve the success you desire.
