May Is Mental Health Awareness Month!
Happy May!
May is a special month for me for a few reasons:
It’s my birth month
It’s the month I decided to leave my job and pursue entrepreneurship
It’s the month we are told to focus on mental health awareness
This May I will be celebrating 2 years as a full time entrepreneur which ironically has been the most stressful and liberating experience of my life—but all stress is not created equally.
I recently got my annual physical and my doctor asked me a series of questions about my mental health related to stress and anxiety with feelings on a scale between 0-3. All of my answers were 0.
In reflecting on the positive improvement in my mental health since becoming self employed I also have to acknowledge the correlation to improvements in my physical health as well. This year in particular I’ve achieved strength, blood cholesterol, and general fitness goals related to positive eating habits and more frequent exercise which are year-over-year improvements compared to the previous 2 years.
I’m not by any means suggesting you go out and quit your job. Nor am I suggesting that I haven’t experienced my share of financial stress and anxiety since I left mine. Entrepreneurship is hard and once upon a time, I believed that it was for everyone.
What I am suggesting, however, is that by focusing on aspects of my mental health that were having a negative impact—like the toxic work environment—and changing that into a healthier form of stress, I’ve been able to improve not only my mental health but my physical health too!
My most POPULAR article on Forbes so far is titled “ Do You Aspire To Be Poor? How Shifting Your Mindset Can Encourage Financial Empowerment”
Did you know I offer 1x1 financial coaching? I recently ran a survey on Twitter asking my audience if they realized I offered financial coaching and the results surprised me! Over 80% of people who completed the poll said no they didn’t. I realized very quickly I needed to solve that problem.
