Dear friend & subscriber,
As you may know, I just might be the most well known thought leader on financial trauma—at least that’s what people tell me—.
Since I originally *thought* I coined the phrase, I’ve seen it plastered across headlines, in articles, on podcasts, as part of people’s titles… etc.
Despite recognizing that I was not the originator of the phrase, I’ve done considerable work over the years to socialize what it is, how to identify it, and what overcoming financial trauma can look like (hence, the start of this publication) both in personal life and in the lives of the people I serve—specifically people who look like me—.
But that has grown hasn’t it? You might be reading this, not look like me and still find value in the assessment and synthesis of academic research and case studies from my work, and the personal anecdotes that make me not just an “expert” talking at you, but a human being going through it with you.
While there is no standard definition of financial trauma, what I have been able to ascertain is the difference between a clinical view of financial trauma —as a sort of pathology— that addresses the nervous system reactions and neurobiology of hardwired fight or flight, freeze or fawn behaviors, and a cultural view of financial trauma that rests heavily on the socialization and impact of capitalism on how we view, interact with, or believe about money.
What if I told you that this knowledge, that these perspectives and experiences would be merged to create not only a master perspective, but a solution?
A solution that consists of several solutions that cross references between schools of thought on trauma recovery, social justice, somatic healing, financial counseling, financial therapy, and more.
*queue drumroll please*
Well… they will be. Yesterday I signed my first traditional publishing deal with Wiley publishing to bring this project to life. Over the next 6 months I’ll be tucked away consuming an incredible amount of content to create what will be my proudest piece of work.
…and I’m bringing you along for the ride.
I imagine there will be tons of questions about my process and the deal and what content I plan to consume and how frequently I’ll be providing updates and I’ll be getting all of that info over to you as this journey unfolds but for now, I just wanted to celebrate with you because when I started this newsletter I had no idea where I wanted it to take me but I knew I had a niche and I wanted to lean into it.
The publication itself has earned 3 industry awards, has contributed to me securing a column with Forbes, and has had a direct hand in influencing the extension of a deal I didn’t even know I needed.
In all honesty, there is doubt around how effective this book project is going to be based on my current audience but I have assured the publisher that my community is a growing community that is mighty and we will make this a success. My only ask is that you hang around for the ride and share this with friends, family, coworkers, employees, anyone and everyone you think will subscribe. My goal as I write this book is to grow this community to at 10,000 strong and give this book a chance to be a NY Times Best Seller.
Hang out in the comments or feel free to reply to this email. I don’t ask for much, but I do ask that you celebrate with me by giving me all the clap or flame emojis in spreading the work.
I’m grateful for you being part of the journey and I will make you proud.
Stay tuned.
Overcoming Financial Trauma with you,
