Breaking Free from Limiting Beliefs: My Personal Awakening
Last night, something powerful and transformative happened to me. As someone who is passionate about improving our relationships with money, I had an eye-opening realization that even I, too, have been harboring limiting beliefs about money. I want to share this personal story with you because I believe it's essential to be open and honest about our struggles, growth, and breakthroughs.
During some deep introspection, a core memory resurfaced from my early teens, which shed light on my subconscious beliefs around money. It was a birthday, and my father approached me to ask what I wanted as a gift. I responded, that I wanted a few articles of clothing, nothing extravagant. He seemed surprised and asked if that was all I wanted, to which I confirmed.
Looking back, I now realize that I somehow knew or sensed that our financial situation wasn't favorable, and I set the bar low to protect myself from disappointment.
Since then, I unknowingly kept the bar low, using the guise of financial responsibility to justify my choices. I convinced myself that I wasn't flashy, that luxury didn't matter, and that buying refurbished was just as good as purchasing brand new items. I even embraced a frugal reputation within my family, as people knew me for being cautious with money. But deep within, this wasn't entirely true.
Through introspection and delving into my own money psychology, I've come to understand that I do enjoy luxury and desire to look and feel good. There's nothing wrong with wanting high-end experiences and brand new items. I deserve to have everything I desire, just like anyone else.
Earlier this year I flew first class for the first time. It was an eye-opener, showing me that I can enjoy the best things in life without guilt. However, I also noticed that my past experiences were still influencing my present actions. When negotiating fees in my business, even if I knew I deserved more, I felt intimidated and held back, fearing disappointment should they say no.
This fear of disappointment in business negotiations and money matters isn't unique to me. As business owners or employees, many of us have sold ourselves short because we anticipate the other party saying no. This deep-seated fear can often be traced back to an early experience with money, just like my birthday incident.
Realizing this has been an empowering step towards dismantling those limiting beliefs and embracing a healthier relationship with money. I am committed to challenging myself to ask for what I deserve and to acknowledge that I am worthy of abundance and prosperity.
I encourage you all to take a moment to reflect on your own money psychology. Are there any early experiences that might be influencing your beliefs and actions today?
